The Muslim Tuareg of Northwestern Africa, live in the Sahel and the southern Sahara. Said to be of Bedouin origin, they are desert people who protect themselves from the dangers of the Sahara by wearing amulets and talisman holders, called tcherots. These boxes often contained verses of the Koran or cabalistic formulas, meant to protect the wearer from evil spirits. Tuareg were and continue to be excellent goldsmiths. Their creative, geometric designs, are unique in choice of pattern, material and design. The layering or mixing of various different precious metals is typical to Tuareg designs.82.5 cm
